By 1892, the renowned Russian leather—whose origins date back to the 16th century—was widely praised for its durability and quality. Legend has it that soldiers treated leather with birch tar to make it waterproof. This practice gave birth to the leather note in perfumery, characterized by smoky, woody, and leathery aromas.
